Fiesta Shutdown Early

Authorities in Arguineguín were forced to shut down a festival three hours earlier than planned when underage drinkers turned the event into a ‘mess’. The Festival del Agua Arguin H2O had attracted a large number of youngsters from outside the municipality, who had arrived on organised buses.

Guardia Civil dismantle Drug Trafficking Organisation

The Guardia Civil have dismantled one of the largest drug smuggling networks in Spain and seized half a ton of hashish under an investigation entitled ‘Operacion Teide’. The group controlled the production of the drug in Morocco and its leader spent his time between that country and Spain. The drugs ring also involved a well-known Gran Canaria Hotel owner, who controlled a logistics operation in the islands. The half ton of hashish was discovered in a Garage in the Santidad area of the municipality of Arucas.

Controversial Sand on Taoro Beach

The spotlight has again been put on the, currently fenced-off, beach at Tauro in Southern Gran Canaria. Besides a cap of imported sand being placed on top of the old rocky shoreline without the correct permissions, it seems that the sand may have been imported from the Western Sahara – contravening EU and International Law.

Guardia Civil Agents Imprisoned for accepting Bribes

Ten members of the Guardia Civil have been expelled from the force, six of whom have been handed prison sentences of between 5 and 9 years, for accepting bribes from African passengers at Gran Canaria Airport. The Agents accepted bribes in return for allowing passengers to enter without declaring large sums of money or goods. The former Guardia Civil Agents were also stripped of all previous honours, banned from public employment and handed fines.
