April if very much springtime in the Canaries, with the likelihood of rain diminishing, and the temperatures beginning to go up after the winter months. However, there is still a chance of mixed weather – especially towards the beginning of the month.
Daytime Maximum Temperatures
Temperatures on the south coasts of all the islands typically see daily high temperatures of between 22 and 28°C in April. The north of Gran Canaria and Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife are usually a degree or two cooler.
Nighttime Lows
Nightly minimum temperatures average about 16°C around the coasts throughout the islands, with large coastal urban areas seeing overnight lows of a degree or two warmer than that. Some nights will likely be warm enough to sit outside without a jacket or fleece, but you’ll still want to pack these items in case of cooler evenings.
Rain
In April, rainfall drops to single figures (mm) in the Eastern Islands (Lanzarote and Fuerteventura) and in the southern parts of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro. However, the northern coast of Tenerife and most of La Palma usually see 30 – 50mm during the month.
Cloud Cover
The north of all islands as well as all of Lanzarote can be quite cloudy at this time of year. The cloud often ‘burns off’ by midday in those northern areas, though it’s probably best to head for the south of Gran Canaria, Tenerife or Fuerteventura to maximise sunshine.
Sea Temperature
The sea is only beginning to warm up in April after the winter, with temperatures of about 18°C around the eastern Islands, and 19-20°C around the western ones.
